Coast Mountain Bus Drivers
VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Commuters who depend on Metro Vancouver buses won’t see picket lines go up any time before Hallowe’en.Last week, members of the union representing bus and SeaBus workers voted 99 per cent in favour of a strike mandate.Three days of scheduled negotiations between the union and Coast Mountain Bus Company wrapped up Thursday.“We’ve just come through three days of negotiations and we’re starting to make some progress, although it’s slow at this stage,” according to Gavin McGarrigle, Western Regional Director of Unifor.Three more days of negotiation are scheduled for Oct. 24, 25 and 28.“We have to give 72 hours notice of any action and we’ve committed that we will not consider doing that until we see how bargaining goes in these three days, so the earliest that we would be considering anything would be after Oct. 28,” he explains.Wages, benefits and working conditions are key issues for the union, and the contracts are complex.“With a contract covering five thousand members, there are many different clauses that are in play. We’ve been putting in the hard work to make sure that we’re trying to go through them one at a time, but you know, we want to make sure that we get it right and that we respond appropriately to our members’ concerns.”. Labour Relations Board vice chair Ken Saunders has dismissed a complaint filed by a bus driver against his union.Chris Holt alleged that Canadian Auto Workers Local 111 failed in its duty of fair representation under section 12 of the Labour Relations Code. The complaint concerned the union's refusal to pursue grievances against the employer, Coast Mountain Bus Company. The issue arose after Holt was assigned to drive a New Flyer bus. He claimed that by giving him this task, the employer failed to accommodate his disability.According to a issued on May 17, Holt booked off work on October 9, 2009.
The employer demanded that he subject himself to a functional capacity evaluation with a specialist selected by management. The LRB decision did not offer details about the nature of Holt's disability. He has not returned to work, according to the ruling. The union filed a grievance, saying that the employee can choose the specialist under certain circumstances. When this occurs, the specialist would be paid by the company. The employer dismissed the grievance at the first stage on October 29, 2009, saying that Holt's situation did not warrant him choosing his own specialist.Meanwhile, according to the ruling, Holt was pursuing a human rights complaint against Coast Mountain Bus Company. The employer notified the union that because the functional capacity evaluation was part of the human rights complaint, Coast Mountain Bus Company was dealing with Holt's lawyer on this matter, and not his union.Holt later asked the union to pursue the grievance. Totally out of this topic but why do YOU PEOPLE(bus drivers)signal when your not even changing lanes after you've picked up a passenger,is that just a bad habbit or what because i think it's damn dangerous! It's confusing to the rest of us using the road just because its the law to yeild when you signal to let you go but you shouldnt signal unless your changing lanes.there has been a few instances where a driver in front of me suddenly brake because of a signalling bus on the right lane and it always causes a chain reaction which is why i say its dangerous! If the transit drivers don't signal they are leaving the curb after pick-up most other vehicle drivers would be outraged that the driver failed to signal that they were merging back into traffic.
You transit drivers have my sympathy. Comments from the peanut gallery aka the vancouver resident are likely bad drivers themselves who fail to yeild to slow moving buses on a regular basis who signal there intention well in advance of any movement.
Most drivers in the GVRD speed up to interfere with the flow of traffic and often disregard the rights of other drivers to merge after signaling the intent. Most vehicle drivers themselves cause the chain reaction mentioned not the transit drivers. We all drive too fast and too close to the vehicle infront of us and allow for little or no reaction time. Vehicle drivers seem to have no knowledge of rules of the road. You can not leave a place of safety the curb or merge from a parked or stopped position until safe to do so.conversely drivers have to be cognizant at all times and react and leave room to allow for the traffic to flow allowing traffic to safely merge.
How To Become A Bus Driver In Bc
Allowing a vehicle to merge infront of you in a safe manner is the law. Share the road and don't judge.
