Personally, I bought CM after reading more than positive reviews on various sites and forums (including this) and after the announcement of the autocal function on the new LG OLEDs that, given the performance, however I will not buy. Certainly it was my 'mistake' and I do not accuse anyone for this. However, as a user of CM not fully satisfied it is my duty/pleasure, within the limits of my skills and knowledge, to point out what is wrong with the software (and support), what can be improved and what should be rewritten.
Therefore it should be the duty and pleasure of Portrait Displays/Spectracal to listen to me, to let me know that they have listened to me and, after having carried out the relevant checks, to do what is in their power to improve the software and, consequently, increase the customer satisfaction, therefore their sales and profit. So the key words are satisfaction and power that, in this case, go hand in hand.
The satisfaction of the customers means good and spontaneous reviews that leads indirectly to more profit. The profit, if well managed, increases the power of a company to improve itself, its product, the support, the welfare of its employees and to make profitable alliances (with LG, Panasonic, Hollywood, Bollywood and so on). What we are seeing (almost all of us) in these days/months/years is a last man standing that is the responsible for coding, debugging, supporting, defending the castle, taking pile of shhh and wash the dishes. Now, I do not know how wide Tyler's shoulders are, but I do not think anyone can bear all this weight and get out alive, let alone victorious. But as much as I can be in pain for him, I first have to think about my pains consisting in having paid a lot a software that holds the exclusives for features that are very very cool and indispensables but that do not work as they should or do not work at all. I feel a bit like when we were children and the owner of the ball (who didn't play very good) had to play by force otherwise he went away with the ball and so who played in team with him was systematically losing without even having fun or not playing at all.I know that many of you have already expressed an opinion or advice here and there. But I think it's time to create a unique thread to collect all these for the sole purpose of helping Spectracal to give what we want, ie calibrate our TVs / Monitors in the best possible way without losing years of our lives, the brain and without losing money unnecessarily. Please, let's make this not the place to do controversy for its own sake or to promote different softwares. Being objectively critical and proactive will certainly help us more.Everyone is invited to talk about their experience (big or small, as a technician/professional or at an amateur level) by dividing the discussion by topics, analyzing one at a time and explaining what is wrong and how to improve it.
No need to copy your calibration graphs or results here, just sum it up and link to your already existent post(s). Thank you.My experience:PRE SALE:All right until I found out that I would have to pay a sum annually to allow me to update the software. For me, this should be a 'una tantum' payment or, at least advertised even better.SALENo problem, the process went smooth and I received via email my license.LICENSE MANAGING- CalMAN itself:the process is easy and functional, but it limits the use of the software to 10 license deactivations. I use only laptops / PCs provided by the company for which I work for personal use that are replaced every 6/12 months and I'm not willing to purchase another one when I already have a better one. Therefore in 5 years I will no longer be able to use this software that I paid $ 399 (and related annual renewals) without a valid reason. From my point of view, it is not a good way to prevent any incorrect use of licenses, nor a way to make money.
On the contrary, this system leads the user to get frustrated and look elsewhere. I do not think that the average user, category in which I'm in, may or may want to crack his calman license to use it on multiple laptops at the same time (it would be against producing) or risk seeing his license canceled for improper use. Plus, in confirmation of what I say, no paid solution calibration software can be found on peer to peer download sites or programs. Suggestions: don't limit license deactivation or advertise it very very clearly.Client3:I found out that I can't deactivate a license and activate it on another client pc/monitor. That should be changed and give the possibility to deactivate license. Obviously, deactivating a license would mean loosing the calibration.
As mentioned above, I use only laptops/PCs provided by the company for which I work that are replaced every 6/12 months. Therefore, after a year and a half I will have my 3 client3 licenses no longer usable and I will have to necessarily turn to other software to calibrate the monitors of my devices. I know Spectracal offers a new clinet3 license for $49 but I'm not a professional calibrator and I only calibrate my monitors/TVs, so I can't spend 49$ every 6 months and I can't see the reason why I should.SUPPORT1) Technically speaking is almost absent.
If you're lucky you can catch Tyler here and get a short answer. Once again, I 'judge' Tyler as innocent, it is not his fault if he is (or he looks like) the last man standing. Suggestions: this is a big flaw.
As this is a technical software you MUST have more than one technical guy supporting the customers, possibly in your site/forums. Hiring other people with proven experience would solve the problem and would not leave others free field to bring CalMAN customers to their side. Or at least not having 'no calman support' as an argument.1 bis) Added on: for the reasons above, I didn't expect anyone from CalMAN organization chart to come here and say 'Hey, thank you for your time.
We're reading your thread as anyone's post here. We do our best to. But I could not believe my eyes when I read. Now let me quote the former CEO of Spectracal and now CTO of Portrait Displays Inc.@who gives a 'simple business economics' lesson to@and the bystanders while he was answering to this@Ted's post. First off I’m not in the habit of discussing business practices in open forums. But it is called simple business economics you have to make some margin of profit selling a product to cover your fixed overheads.
If you don’t then you need to make it up in some other area of your business, these things are called loss leaders. Give them away at or below cost to drive margin in another part of your business. Without one or the other you are not going to be in business very long.So let’s have a little exercise in business economics by developing a brand new product for distribution and resale. We are going to build a linear space absorber or “LSA” for a new market. You first have to define the market size using a term called TAM “Total Accessible Market” how many could use this new product.
From that you calculate how many will actually buy said product “The Need” once it is in the market place. From that you look around and see what other competitive products if any are selling for and if your product has at least one of these two criteria’s: 1) adds more feature for the same cost 2) has same features at much less of a cost. Now we are ready to price our LSA says the analysis above should we can sell this new device for around $1000 retail. Now we need to back out the cost of going into distribution and resellers, you know they need margin as well to stay in business. So the accepted number for distribution and retail this is 35-50% which means we can sell said product to a reseller at $500.
Now we need to look at what is called the BOM “Bill of Materials” what is this thing going to cost us to build. But we also need around 50% margin to stay in business and recover engineering, marketing and running costs. So our BOM can’t be more that $250 at the most. So this is how a product that really only cost $250 build but actually cost the consumer $1000. But that is how every product you see today is done.
Yes some have high volume and low margin think cell phones. Others have low volume and high margin think of a Ferrari. And the rest are somewhere in between. So when the eeColor was released by Entertainment Experience it’s retail cost was $1599 and what we and others sold it for. But in our traditional fashion we don’t just resell products we also have some value add. In this case taking a non-linear RGB processor and turning it into a linear RGB processor, in this case with a firmware update and changing all of the 1D ramps the ColorBox.Now we have the same hardware selling for $600. I will give you one guess at what business model they are using and here is a hint “to stay in business you have to make some margin of profit somewhere in the company”. This is very simple business economics make some margin of profit or go out of business. He really deserved 42 minutes of applause and standing ovation.

But what is missing in his speech (apart from a few commas and the fact that shortly Spectracal would have removed the useless calibration of the 1D Lut, making vain all the part of the speech where 'we have made linear something that is not linear', therefore the higher price) it is that for not going out of business you have to take care of ALL of your customers. So when defining your TAM, you also need to think about how many customers you are able to take care of. If the answer is 'only those who pay $ 599 a year' then you should: or clearly say that those who pay $ 69 a year are not worthy of your consideration or take away the annual fees for them.
If not, sooner or later, you gonna loose your sacrosanct and beloved profit and you gonna go out of business. I'll made this point more intelligible: $599 x 1 = $599; $69 x 10 = $690; $69 x 100 = $6,900. Should I continue?
You sure?@was it so humiliating to reply here to Doug@and kill two birds with one stone? In my opinion, there is a lack of healthy cunning and politeness that never hurts in the business world.2) other support requests: in 1 or 2 days you'd probably get a solution. Which is OK.OPERATIONSManual Calibration: In my not so wide experience, there are some doubts still open like or like gamma verification on 3D Lut created with other software. But generally speaking it works and it still is the best looking calibration software.Autocal: 1D Lut grayscale autocal TVs and PC monitors always needs manual tweaking. Sometimes it's a breeze and in two minutes you're done and other times it's almost like doing everything manually or worse. I think it does not require a total rewrite of the algorithm just a serious fine tuning.3D Lut: doing a 3D Lut with CalMAN always gives results with lower peak luminance and artifacts. Also non linearity is a big flaw.
Right now, IMO, it is the least effective software among those that provide the creation of 3D Lut, including free ones. I am afraid that, in this case, it is really necessary a total rewriting of the code. I won't speak about LG 2018 Autocal as I don't have that TV.For all these reasons, I bought another software that it's limited to 3D Lut, not so good looking but that allowed me to create my 3D Luts without major problems and to enjoy movies.Am I happy now? No, I'm not happy because I spent $ 399 and I would not want to lose them, rather I would like to make them satisfy me. LICENSE MANAGING- CalMAN itself:the process is easy and functional, but it limits the use of the software to 10 license deactivations. Plus, in confirmation of what I say, no paid solution calibration software can be found on peer to peer download sites or programs. Suggestions: don't limit license deactivation or advertise it very very clearly. You may want to check on this before assuming.
Liscencing deactivation limits are used to prevent abusing distribution of the software. If you ask Tyler, and you haven't raised any red flags, they will reset your deactivations at no cost.
Client3:I found out that I can't deactivate a license and activate it on another client pc/monitor. That should be changed and give the possibility to deactivate license. AFAIK, as long as you are using your liscences on your own computers and not abusing mass distribution, then they can reset your activation if you replace your PC/monitor.

OPERATIONSManual Calibration: In my not so wide experience, there are some doubts still open like or like gamma verification on 3D Lut created with other software. @thank you for your answer but my thread wasn't a help request. Anyway, since you've spent your time for me (once again, thank you) I'm glad to clarify some point:1) annual fees: what you said is fair but I discovered it after I bought CM, so, at least for me, it wasn't sufficiently adviced. And I'm sure everyone here wants at least the fixes. Ie if in 2019 they fix 3D Lut creation engine, why should I pay for somthing that currently doesn't work properly?2) for the client3 license issue I asked once to their customer support (not Tyler) and they gave me another license but they underlined the fact that it was a one time only concession, no more 'I changed my laptop please reset the license' request allowed. But, since you have more experience than me in this subject, I will surely retry when I'll need to (thank you). Same for the Calman license.3) about the support: here you have me absolutely against. If I buy a Mercedes I don't want and don't have to ask an amateur club to help me.
It's Mercedes that has to, cause if they don't I'll ask for a refund and buy a BMW with those money.4) Autocal: lately the community is a bit upset on this subjectSo you don't have anything to ask to Spectracal, do you? 1) annual fees: what you said is fair but I discovered it after I bought CM, so, at least for me, it wasn't sufficiently adviced.
And I'm sure everyone here wants at least the fixes. Merkur xr4ti repair manual. Ie if in 2019 they fix 3D Lut creation engine, why should I pay for somthing that currently doesn't work properly?I can understand how someone may miss the annual fees, but for most people this isn't an issue. The information is there when you go to checkout. I do agree that fixes should be provided free for legacy users. This has always been an issue under discussion. 2) for the client3 license issue I asked once to their customer support (not Tyler) and they gave me another license but they underlined the fact that it was a one time only concession, no more 'I changed my laptop please reset the license' request allowed. But, since you have more experience than me in this subject, I will surely retry when I'll need to (thank you).
Same for the Calman license. They will reset your Calman liscence deactivations as long as you aren't abusing it. With Client3, I can understand why as this prevents abuse just like Calman. It is a commercial product mostly, so measures have to be taken to prevent abuse. I do agree that this does make it difficult for average consumers. Thank you for your suggestions, really appreciated. Tomorrow I'll start to collect some fragmented infos and put it in here.Just wanted to provide you a hat tip for starting this thread, as it inspired me to get up off my butt and document feedback about CalMAN that I've been telling myself I need to post for several months now.Because my feedback is primarily focused on the experience of a working, touring calibrator, I posted my feedback as a separate post.

Thank you very much for your participation and presence,I can only confirm what you said about email support, since I already outlined that on my FP.But what you claim is limited to the problems of management of the program (license.), while for the purely technical side or requests for advice on a certain procedure there is much to improve both via email and via Spectracal forums. There are many requests that do not receive an answer or that receive an interlocutory answer but are waiting for a conclusive one. I don't want to fulfill this post with a list of links to unanswered requests on your forums (unless that would help you guys out, In this case, just ask and I will do it willingly).
Thanks Royce, this looks interesting, could you elaborate more, please? The app is only reporting whether or not the RGB levels are linear. Such a linear progression would result in a straight line from lower left to upper right. This doesn't mean that the levels in the profile are incorrect, if they are generated by readings from the display. Similarly, when one does a manual calibration of gray scale and gamma on a TV, the resultant RGB levels almost never climb from 0% to 100% in a totally linear fashion. If they do, you're one lucky person! Ted has previously recommended using this utility to check whether or not a video card's profile is adversely modifying its output when trying to use it as part of a pattern generation solution, which could reduce the bit accuracy of any patterns produced.
